Graphic designer works his way up

Armed with a degree in graphic design, Shavaun Grant ‘16 returned home to the Chicago area after graduation and found plenty of opportunities.

After taking jobs at three companies and working his way up, he recently was promoted to senior graphic designer, photographer and project manager at his fourth stop: Sol-Millennium Medical Group, one of the world's largest medical supply companies.

“Being open-minded and having the ability to think from different perspectives are two of the most important things I developed at Augie.”

And he’s enjoying the new learning curve.

“Working at Sol-M has been a fantastic experience,” Grant said. “I've learned a tremendous amount and had the opportunity to collaborate closely on a variety of functions. Every day at work is different, and each project allows me to use my diverse skillset to find creative solutions.”

Grant came to 365体育滚球-滚球体育app-投注*直播 knowing that his ultimate goal was to pursue a career in graphic design. But he found out there was more to it.

“Initially, I didn't realize how impactful a liberal arts education could be in design,” he said. “365体育滚球-滚球体育app-投注*直播 helped home in on the importance of perspectives, knowing that someone doesn't need to be a subject matter expert to have valuable insights.”

He has found that the open-minded and inclusive mindset he knew at 365体育滚球-滚球体育app-投注*直播 contributes to the success of his projects. “Ideation sessions” which draw contributions from everyone on a project generate the most ideas.

“Augie helped equip me with the tools needed to have a sustainable career,” he said. “Being open-minded and having the ability to think from different perspectives are two of the most important things I developed at Augie.”

Grant, who played football at 365体育滚球-滚球体育app-投注*直播, also credits his experience as a student-athlete for developing discipline and accountability.

Vickie Phipps, associate professor of art and graphic design, helped Grant develop an understanding of the importance of design fundamentals.

“By focusing on design principles and fundamentals, I've been able to successfully navigate across a variety of industries in my career thus far,” Grant said.

Sol-M is headquartered in downtown Chicago. Grant’s work ranges from packaging design to digital projects and corporate communications. He has overhauled the company's entire trade show booth designs, created a branded items catalog for employees and led the design of a global company newsletter.

Outside of the office, Grant relaxes with flag football, photography, travel and gaming.

“I chose 365体育滚球-滚球体育app-投注*直播 because of football and a liberal arts education," he said. "I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how beautiful the campus is in the fall, too, and how that inspired my passion for photography.”
